Notation Privacy Policy
This policy explains how the Notation app handles information on your device. By using the app, you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Summary
Notation is a place to write notes in Markdown. Everything you write is stored on your device and, if iCloud sync is on, in your own private iCloud account. Studio Spreza does not operate servers that hold your data, and the app makes no network requests of its own.
Data on your device
- Your notes. The text you write, the pictures you add, earlier versions of a note kept for 30 days, and notes in Recently Deleted for 30 days are stored on your device.
- Search. An index of your notes' titles and words is kept on your device so search is fast. It never leaves the device.
- Settings. Preferences such as appearance, the reading face and how long a locked note stays open are stored on the device.
- Companion surfaces. The widgets show the note you pinned last, read from a short summary the app keeps on your device. The share extension hands what you share to the app on your device. A locked note appears in both as its title only.
- Spotlight. If you leave Show notes in Spotlight on, your notes' titles and words are added to your device's own search index, so you can find a note from anywhere on the device. Locked notes are never added. You can turn this off in the app.
iCloud sync
Notation syncs your notes across your own devices using CloudKit and your personal iCloud account. This is on by default, and you can turn it off in the app under Settings.
When sync is on, your notes are stored in your private iCloud database under your own Apple ID, and the text of every note is end-to-end encrypted there. It is governed by Apple's privacy policy and terms. Studio Spreza has no access to that database and cannot read your synced data. If you turn sync off, or if iCloud is unavailable, the app continues to work on-device.
Locked notes
You can lock a note. Opening it asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode, through Apple's own system; Notation never receives your face, fingerprint or passcode. A locked note shows only its title in the app, in widgets, in search and in the share sheet. The lock guards the note on your devices. It does not add a separate password or encryption of its own.
Importing and exporting
Notation reads only the files and folders you choose to import, and writes only the files you choose to export, where you choose to save them. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Network use
The app makes no network requests of its own. It does not fetch link previews or page titles. It has no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, and no third-party services embedded in it. The only data that leaves your device is the iCloud sync described above, which goes to your own Apple account.
What Studio Spreza does not do
- No Studio Spreza account. No sign-up, no login, no profile.
- No Studio Spreza server holding your notes.
- No analytics, no crash reporting, and no advertising SDKs in the app.
- No access to your location, contacts, calendar, reminders, health data or photo library. Adding a picture uses Apple's picker, which gives the app only the pictures you choose.
- No tracking. The app does not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and does not use App Tracking Transparency for that purpose.
- We do not sell your personal information.
If any of this changes, this policy will be updated and the App Store privacy labels will be updated with it.
Your choices
- iCloud sync. Turn it on or off in the app. You can also manage iCloud for Notation in Settings under your Apple ID.
- Spotlight. Turn Show notes in Spotlight off in the app.
- Your notes. Export them at any time, as Markdown files or a full Notation Archive. Deleting a note moves it to Recently Deleted for 30 days, and deleting the app removes its on-device data according to iOS behavior. If you used iCloud sync, you can also remove Notation's data from your iCloud account in Settings.
Children's privacy
The app is not directed specifically at children under 13. If you believe information has been collected that should be removed, contact us at the address below.
Changes
We may update this policy when the app changes. The date at the top changes when we do. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
